Let's make our community a better place!
The Shepherd God guided His under-shepherd, Rev. Dr. George Thompson, Jr., to gather his faithful flock for a new beginning—a church where the warmth of loving relationships among its members will be reflected in social responsibilities and a caring fellowship and ministers for members and community.
Our pastor envisioned a caring church with emphasis on:
WORSHIP
…to renew, refresh and replenish
…to provide mountaintop spiritual experiences
…to inspire faith and uplift the spirits of worshippers by altar call at weekly
services.
We are dedicated to improving the lives of those in our community. Your contribution today helps us make a difference.
to have a “spiritually alive preaching-teaching emphasis” by (1) applying the Bible to issues and concerns of the everyday world; (2) by sharpening sensitivities to the issues of the day so through Bible studies, individual and corporate devotions, we can discern the will of God for any given moment and crisis.
(3) to provide a multi-dimensional program in church life in general and worship services in particular to minister to the whole person: and (4) for consciousness-raising of conditions on mission fields and responding to them.
In the spring of 1982, the New Horizon Volunteer Gospel Choir was organized, with Sister Flora J. Anderson as president. During her ten- year tenure, she opened her home as a six-year base for choir rehearsals. As the choir grew, rehearsals were continued at the home of Rev. Dr. George Thompson, Jr.
In 1988, New Horizon Baptist Church moved to 66th Street and 7th Avenue to worship at Oak Lane United Church of Christ. During the time we were there Rev. Dr. Thompson accepted the pastorate of Oak Lane UCC and we began to combine the worship services.
In October of 1999, we purchased the building located at 5532 Rising Sun Avenue. Once renovations were complete, we entered our new building in January 2001. New Horizon Baptist Church is a Ministry Center dedicated to meeting the spiritual needs of the community and the world through practical Christian teaching and Outreach. The mission of our church is to follow the command of Jesus and make disciples of believers in Christ through teaching and training and then to reach out to others to present Christ to the world.
